Astorga’s Late Goal Inches Brilla Closer to Playoff Spot

HOUSTON, Texas. - Better late than never! Mississippi Brilla FC picked up a massive three points tonight with a 1-0 win over Houston FC. Arturo Astorga’s strike in second-half stoppage time provided the difference for Brilla, moving the team three points closer to a playoff spot.

The first half had few clear cut chances. Remi Emeriau, who was making his first start tonight, had Brilla’s best opportunity. He intercepted a clearance and hit a blistering strike that was held by the keeper.

The second half was much more eventful. Emeriau came close again, but his strike was parried away.

Ciro Damine came into the match and immediately made a difference offensively. In the 85th minute, he received a pass from fellow substitute Jalen James, but his shot was saved by the keeper.

Brilla looked to be in prime position to secure the three points when Jalen James was fouled inside the box in the 88th minute. However, his ensuing penalty kick was saved by Houston FC’s goalkeeper.

But that set the stage for the final act of the drama. Mateo Alzate, who subbed on for Duncan Storey, played a nice ball to Arturo Astorga on the left wing. Astorga then cut inside to his right foot and fired home the winning goal, sending the Brilla bench into delirium.

Jonathan Burke picked up the win and clean sheet in goal tonight. His clutch 71st minute save kept the match scoreless, and he also had a stoppage time save right before Astorga’s goal.
