Mississippi Brilla entered Thursday’s home match needing a win in order to keep their hopes alive of catching up with their opponent and Mid-South Division leader, the Midland/Odessa Sockers. Despite a commanding first half, Brilla would ultimately fall short, losing 2-1.
Brilla started the match strongly with forward Newton Henry creating several chances to score. He finally broke through in the 17th minute when Jake McCain’s pass found Henry inside the penalty area. Henry slotted the ball into the Sockers net to put the home team up 1-0.
The Sockers regained their footing eleven minutes after the halftime interval when Caio Ruiz buried a free kick from 20 yards out into the corner of the Brilla net.
The Sockers would take the lead for good just ten minutes later when Grant Mobley pounced on the rebound after Jaakko Hietikko’s blasted shot caromed off the Brilla goalpost.
The loss takes Brilla’s record to 4-5-1 while Midland improves their record to 6-1-2.
The teams will face off again Saturday night at Traceway Park at 7:00 PM.
