Mississippi Brilla FC Kicks Off Season Opener On May 16

May 15, 2019
With the start of summer comes the start of a new season for Mississippi Brilla FC.

Now part of the new USL League Two, Brilla FC finds itself surrounded by newness. From Coach Luke Sanford, the team’s new head coach, and new division, moving from the Deep South Division to the Mid South Division, Brilla will look to improve on their 8-2-4 record.

Last season, Brilla FC just missed the post season, but the team did progress to the third round of the US Open Cup after defeating Indy Eleven of the USL Championship. Brilla FC eventually fell to Nashville SC, a team slated to be an MLS expansion franchise in 2020.

New head coach Luke Sanford is no stranger to Brilla FC, playing for the club during its inaugural 2007 season. Currently the head coach for Indiana Wesleyan  Sanford just completed his fourth year with the Wildcats.

“I have been encouraged each day with this group. We have progressed in training with each session, and I feel good about where we are at given our short time together,” Sanford said.

“Perhaps most importantly, the guys are humble and are already showing signs of what makes teams great in their camaraderie and mentality for the team,” he added. “I’m excited to see them play.”

Sanford is joined by assistant coach Douglas Oliveira and goalkeeper coach Humberto Peleaz.

The 2019 season will also feature giveaways at each home game as well as local food venders.

For the home and season opener, Brilla FC schedule posters will be given away and will be provided by Soccer Shots. Grumpy Dave’s Kettle corn and Cups of Clinton will also be on site serving up specialty kettle corn and specialty coffee products. The Fuzzy’s Kids Zone will feature inflatables provided by Juan’s Upholstery.

“We are really looking forward to another exciting season,” Executive Director and General Manager Rusty Bryant said. “We have put a lot of work into building a quality team on the field, and an environment for the entire family in the stadium. I feel like the community is ready to get the season started.”

Thursday night, Brilla will kick off its 13th season against Texas United out of the Dallas area. Game time is 7:30 P.M. and tickets are $5. Season tickets are still available, and all home matches will be played at Arrow Field on the campus of Clinton High School.
