Brilla Signs De Giorgi and Lao

By Datti Jinkiri

Mississippi Brilla FC Coach Mark McKeever is looking to add some Iberian influence to the team with his latest two signings.  Forwards Andre De Giorgi and Xavi Lao, hailing from Portugal and Spain respectively, will be making their debuts for the Clinton, MS Premier Development League side this summer, pending league approval..

De Giorgi recently completed his junior season at Tusculum College.  The Lisbon native led the scoring barrage for the Pioneers, racking up 16 goals and one assist.  His resume includes an SAC Tournament (where he scored the extra time winner) and an All-Southeast Region Team selection.

“Andre was one of the first players I chased to recruit for the team this year,” McKeever stated.  “I am a huge fan of his capabilities as a footballer. He is tremendously versatile and can play a number of roles. He has fantastic instincts in front of goal, which allows him to be an exceptional #9. However, he also has a huge amount of creativity which allows him to play in withdrawn roles and create for others. I feel confident that Andre has a future as a professional footballer because he is a player who brings a strong winning mentality and a high level of quality to the team. I am excited to see Andre score and create goals for this Brilla team in the summer!”

Lao's freshman season ended with a GSC First Team selection, and he followed it up with a Second Team selection this past season.  The Barcelona native led Christian Brothers University with eight goals. McKeever will looking to him to be a reliable option in the attacking third.

“Xavi is an exciting player to watch, and I have a feeling he will create some nightmares for the defenders he plays against, “ McKeever said.  “He has the ability to change the environment in the blink of an eye with his ability to take opponents on and combine with his teammates. When Xavi is on his game, he is a handful for any opponent trying to stop him!”

Brilla’s first home match of the 2017 season will take place on Thursday, May 25 at Clinton High School Arrow Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
