CLINTON, Miss- Brilla coach Mark McKeever has made another recent addition to the 2016 team, and this addition is one of the most important signings yet. Sergio Royo will be returning for his second Brilla season, and he will be hoping that he can build off of his stellar performance from his debut season.
Royo arrived last season as an unknown variable among the fans in Clinton. However, he left town only after gaining the attention of the fans, as well as more than a few professional scouts. Royo was a major key to Brilla winning the Mid South Division championship. He immediately made an impact in the attacking midfielder role and finished the season with seven goals and four assists. Royo capped off his stellar season by making the All-PDL Southern Conference Team and All-League Team. He was also listed in the PDL’s Top 50 prospects.
The Madrid, Spain native completed his final college season at the University of Northwestern Ohio this past fall. It was a fruitful season, as he became the first NAIA First Team All-American to hail from the university. Royo set the UNOH single season record for goals in a season (17), game-winning goals (6), and points (44). Royo also added 10 assists this season as well, extending his career assists record to 24. He finished his career with 42 goals, another UNOH record.
McKeever is understandably ecstatic about the return of Royo. “Sergio’s commitment to return to MS Brilla is music to my ears!” McKeever said. “He is probably the most creative player I have ever coached. Sergio’s personality will be great for the team, as he is a positive spiritual young man that is blessed with a remarkable talent in football. He is a great role model for our younger players, and I imagine he will be ready to set the PDL on fire this year. After a quality year last year, I know Sergio is looking to take his game to the next level and showcase his talents to the professional footballing world.”
Mississippi Brilla FC plays host to the first round of the U.S. Open Cup on May 11. They then open the PDL season with a home contest against Peachtree City on May 14. Home matches will be played at Clinton’s Traceway Park.
