Brilla Regains Division Lead With Win Over Sockers

In the series finale on Sunday between the top two teams in the Mid-South Division, Mississippi Brilla upended the Midland/Odessa Sockers by a 3-0 margin. The victory propelled Brilla to the top spot in the division with a 5-2-3 record and 18 points. The Sockers sit narrowly behind with a 5-3-2 record and 17 points.

The Mississippi squad came out determined to defend its home turf and pick up a big 3 points in the standings. They struck first in the 35th minute when Carlos Garces blasted a shot home from close range off an assist from Kellen Gulley.

The home team added to their lead just before halftime as Gulley contributed a score of his own in the 45th minute. Sergio Royo played a ball through that Gulley was able to race onto and calmly place into the corner of the net. Royo’s assist was his team leading fourth on the season. Brilla went into the break with a 2-0 lead.

It didn’t take long for Brilla to ice the game as the second half began. Macauley King played a long ball from the back line that found Gulley on the run. Gulley was able to chip the Sockers goalkeeper to collect his second goal of the night, and his team leading sixth of the season. The 3-0 scoreline held up through the second half as Brilla finished 2-1-1 in the four-game set with the Sockers.

Brilla closes out the regular season with two matches in Houston next weekend. The team will be looking to lock up one of the two playoff spots from the Mid-South Division.
